CommentsThis report includes several major findings with regard to changes in farmworker employment and income. The number of farmworkers increased from 966,000 in 1996 to almost 1.1 million in 2001. The average farm employment fell from 408,000 in 1996 to 388,000 in 2001. Farmworkers are increasingly employed by farm labor contractors, who pay on average $4,385. Workers employed directly by growers earn an average of $11,518. Lastly, the authors report that many farmworkers are unemployed for significant portions of the year and suggests matching workers to unfilled jobs.
